Women’s Tennis Wins Twice

ORLANDO, Fla. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated both Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) and Wisconsin Lutheran College by identical 7-2 scores on Thursday.

The Saints opened the day with a 7-2 victory over NAIA's Saint Ambrose. CSS swept all three doubles matches with the No. 1 team of Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) winning 8-2. The No. 2 tandem of Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) and Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) came out on top 8-5 as did the No. 3 team of Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) and Cortne Solberg (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) 8-4.

Bungarden won at No. 1 singles in a third set super-breaker 6-4, 1-6, (10-5). Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) cruised at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-1. At No. 4, Pamela Hartley (Lima, Peru/Franklin Roosevelt College) was named the winner after her opponent retired in the first set with Hartley up 5-4. Kelsey Geiger (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) was the final winner at the No. 5 spot 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). St. Ambrose fell to 3-12 with the loss.

In the afternoon, the Saints cruised over Wisconsin Lutheran 7-2. The victory over Warriors means the Saints have defeated all of Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) co-regular season champions in the last two weeks. The NAC holds its regular season in the fall.

CSS won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles against the Warriors. The No. 2 team of Solberg and Gunderson won 8-4 and the No. 3 team of Carlson and Lawrence won 8-2.

Zwiener would win at No. 1 singles when her opponent had to retire. Gunderson won at the No. 2 spot 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). Solberg at No. 3 and Lawrence at No. 4 would drop just one game between them as Solberg won 6-1, 6-0 and Lawrence blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Hartley was the final winner at the No. 6 spot 7-5, 6-3. The Warriors fall to 11-8 with the loss.

The Saints (6-4) conclude their spring trip tomorrow when they face Illinois Wesleyan University in the morning.
