WINONA, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team gave Saints Mary's University all it could handle on Sunday in its third match in three days in the third different city as the Cardinals prevailed 5-4 at the Winona Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (4-2) are ranked 24th in the Central Region, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and have now won three straight matches.
Saint Mary's won two doubles matches to begin the dual. The No. 3 CSS team of
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and
Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) were the lone tandem to win at 8-2. One match in doubles that could have possibly turned the tide in the Saints' favor was at the No. 2 as the team
Cortne Solberg (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) and
Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) lost in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4).
Gunderson also won in singles play in straight sets at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 7-5 to improve to 4-0 on the young season.
A pair of Saints rallied from a set down to win in a third set super-breaker. Solberg won at No. 4 by scores of 2-6, 6-2, (10-7). Then at No. 6,
Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) won with scores of 5-7, 7-5, (10-5). Zwiener had her second close defeat of the day at No. 2 singles as McKennah Edwards, who is ranked ninth in the Central Region, won by scores of 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
The Saints (2-2) will be in action next on Friday, March 2nd when they will square off against Concordia University (Wis.) in the Milwaukee superb of Mequon.
