Women’s Tennis Knocks off UMD for First Win

DULUTH, Minn. – In a tight match the St. Scholastica women's tennis team edged city rival University of Minnesota Duluth by a score of 5-4 on Friday night at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.

The Saints earned victories in two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) won 8-6, while the No. 2 team of Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) and Cortne Solberg (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) came out on top 8-3.

The singles were tightly contested as three of the six were decided by a third set super-breaker. The Bulldogs (2-2) came out on top at the top two singles flights, both by super breakers. CSS's Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won her match at the No. 3 spot 6-4, 7-5.

Solberg came from behind to win in a super breaker after dropping the first set by scores of 3-6, 6-4, (10-8). The final win of the night was by Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy), who put the Saints over the top in the dual, with a straight sets triumph 6-0, 6-4.

The Saints (1-1) hit the road tomorrow to face Hamline University at 4 p.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
