The St. Scholastica men's hockey team squeaked by the eighth-ranked University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons 1-0 at Hunt Arena on Friday night.
The win over the Falcons (15-7-2, 9-6-2 NCHA) is the first shutout the Saints have been involved in this year, win or loss, and the first time the Saints have shutout a team since January of 2010 when they defeated UW-Stout 3-0.
The Saints also clinch home ice in the first round of the Peters Cup with tonight's victory.
The first period was quiet until the 10:14 point when
Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) notched his ninth goal of the season on assists from
Jeremy Dawes (Winnipeg, Manitoba/College Jeanne Suave (Portage-MJHL) ) and
Austin Brown (Lathrup Village, Mich./Legacy HS (Woodstock-MJAHL) ) making it 1-0 in favor of CSS. The Saints held the one goal lead for the rest of the period and into the first intermission.
The second period proved to be a stand-still as no goals were scored and just one penalty was called on each team. St. Scholastica's
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) and UW-River Falls' Scott Lewan combined for 22 saves in the period to keep the score at 1-0.
The third period was nearly a mirror image of the second period as both teams went without a penalty and neither team was able to find the net as the Saints went on to victory 1-0 over the Falcons.
Rundell made 24 saves earning his first shutout of the year and improving his record to 10-7-4.
Davis' goal gives him 22 total points while Dawes' assist moves him into sole possession of second on the team with 24 points on 10 goals and 14 assists.
The Saints (13-7-4, 8-5-4 NCHA) will be back on the ice tomorrow night in Eau Claire to take on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugolds (11-10-3, 5-10-2 NCHA) at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on GameCentral portal at csssaints.com.
