Women’s Basketball Unable to Make a 3-Pointer in Loss at William Penn

Box Score OSKALOOSA, Iowa (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was 0-for-17 from beyond the arc in Saturday's 79-56 loss to NAIA's William Penn University (Iowa).

The Lady Statesmen (8-6) broke open a 4-4 game with a 10-0 run five minutes and 25 seconds into the contest. An Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) jumper at the 7:20 mark in the half cut the margin to five, but William Penn answered with a 14-3 run and went into halftime with a 37-25 lead.

The Saints shot 35 percent from the field in the first half and were 0-for-7 on 3-point attempts in the half. The Lady Statesmen shot 44 percent and outscored CSS 16-6 in the paint.

Two quick buckets by Frase at the start of the second half cut the lead to eight, but William Penn responded once again with an 11-2 run to lead 48-31. The margin never got closer than 15 the rest of the way as the Lady Statesmen went on to win 79-56.

St. Scholastica shot only 30 percent in the second half and was 0-for-10 from 3-point land to finish at 0-for-17 for the game. The last time the Saints went without a made 3-pointer in game was November 23, 2007 at UW-Stout. From then to today, the Saints went 133 straight games with at least one made 3-point field goal.

William Penn shot 47 percent from the floor in the second half to finish at 46 percent for the game.

Frase scored a career-high 22 points in the loss for the Saints. Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) added a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Katie Golomski had 17 points to pace the Lady Statesmen.

The Saints (3-8) will not be back in action until Tuesday, January 8th when they open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action at Northland College.
