Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. (csssaints.com) – University of Wisconsin-Superior's Sally Linzmeier scored 19 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 30 to lead the Yellowjackets past the St. Scholastica women's basketball team 85-75 on Friday night at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
The Yellowjackets (7-2) jumped out to a 14-4 lead three minutes into the contest, but the Saints responded with a 13-4 run and would tie the game at 20-20 midway through the half. CSS would not be able to take the lead as the 'jackets went back in front and hung on to go into halftime with a 40-34 advantage.
The Saints shot 41 percent from the field in the first half and were 8-for-9 from the free throw line. The Yellowjackets shot 43 percent from the field. UWS also had a 10-2 advantage in second-chance points and points off turnovers.
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) drained a 3-pointer to start the second half to cut the margin to three. UWS responded by going on an 8-0 run a few minutes later to extend its lead to 57-44. The lead got as high as 17 with 10 minutes to go in the game, but CSS would get it down to seven with over four minutes to go. However, that is as close as the Saints got as the 'jackets won by a final score of 85-75.
The Saints shot 48 percent in the second half to finish at 44 percent for the game. The Yellowjackets shot only 28 percent in the second half to finish at 36 percent. UWS would get 21 offensive rebounds which led to 21 second-chance points. Superior also scored 21 points off of 21 CSS turnovers. The 'jackets also were 24-for-28 from the free throw line in the second half.
Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) led five Saints in double-figures with 15 points. She also had a team-high 10 rebounds for her second career double-double and first of the season.
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) poured in 14 points, while
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) and
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) each had 13 points off the bench.
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) was the final in double digits with 10 points.
The Saints (3-6) will be off until after Christmas when they travel to Iowa to face Central College on Friday, December 28th and William Penn University on Saturday, December 29th.
