Dubuque Controls from the Start as Women’s Basketball Falls

Box Score MENOMONIE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was defeated by the University of Dubuque (Iowa) 78-57 Sunday afternoon in the Quality Inn & Suites Turkey Shootout on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

The Saints trailed early in the game as Dubuque opened the game on a 10-2 run and the Spartans would never relinquish the lead after that.  The Saints trailed as much as 17 in the first half and never were able to chip away at the Spartans' lead.  CSS went into the half trailing 45-30.

The second half was much of the same as the Saints trailed by 29 points with about eight minutes left in the game.  The Spartans capitalized on the large lead and utilized all 20 players on the roster.  The Saints would eventually fall 78-57.

Dubuque (3-1) did not have a player in double digits for scoring, but 15 players scored for the Spartans with two players leading the way at nine points apiece. 

The Spartans shot 44 percent from the field for the game, 46 percent from beyond the arc and 63 percent from the charity stripe.  Dubuque recorded 23 offensive rebounds and outscored the Saints 29-10 in second-chance points. The Spartans did however commit 20 turnovers.

St. Scholastica was led by junior Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) with 12 points and six rebounds.  Sophomore Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) added ten points coming off of the bench. 

The Saints shot 35 percent from the field, 33 percent from beyond the arc and 73 percent from the free-throw line for the game.  CSS committed 22 turnovers and were out-rebounded 50-34.

The Saints (0-4) will look for their first win of the season this coming Wednesday as they host UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. in the Reif Gymnasium.  That game can be viewed live on Saints Sports Net via csssaints.com.
