Box Score MENOMONIE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team rallied from a 19-point deficit in the first half to take a halftime lead, but the University of Wisconsin-Stout regained control in the second half and prevailed 90-78 in the Quality Inn & Suites Turkey Shootout, hosted by the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils (2-2) went on an early 8-0 run to take a 14-4 lead. Later in the half, Stout went on another run, this time 14-1, to extend its lead to 28-9 with 6:22 left in the half. The Saints would get back in the game, mostly from the free throw line. Stout also went three minutes and 42 seconds without scoring as CSS went on a 17-0 run to take a 38-34 lead. The Saints had a halftime lead of 38-36.
Both teams had similar shooting percentage with the Saints at 35 percent and the Blue Devils at 33 percent. CSS made 19 free throws, while Stout had just five free throws.
Stout outscored the Saints 8-2 to open the second half to regain the lead.
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) tied the game back up for the Saints with less than 13 minutes left in the second half.
However, the Blue Devils went on a 7-1 run and then later went on a 9-0 run to go back up by 19 points. Stout would go on to win by a final score of 90-79.
Both teams shot at least 50 percent from the field in the second half. The Blue Devils made 10, 3-pointers and scored 33 points on 27 CSS turnovers. The Saints were 36-for-46 from the free throw line. The 36 free throws made set a new program record and the 46 attempts are one shy of the program record.
The Saints had five players score in double figures led by
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) with 15 points. Frase also had a team-high nine rebounds.
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 13 points,
Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) and
Kayla Heisler (Remer, Minn./Northland HS) each had 12 points and
Sammy Doucette (Colfax, Wis./Colfax HS (UW-River Falls)) had 11 points. Sami Schroeder had 24 points to lead the Blue Devils.
The Saints (0-3) will be back in action tomorrow morning at the Quality Inn & Suites Turkey Shootout when they face the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at 11 a.m.
