Men’s Basketball Stumbles against the Falcons

Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 69-43 loss to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic, hosted by UW-Superior on Saturday.

The Falcons (2-2) opened the game scoring the first seven points, all by David Stanley. MarShaan Johnson (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis North HS (Minneapolis Comm. & Tech. College)) got the margin down to five twice in the half, but that is as close as the Saints got. River Falls had another 7-0 run later in the half and went into the locker room with a 32-20 lead.

The Saints shot just 27 percent in the half, while the Falcons shot 34 percent. The Falcons also had seven more offensive rebounds than CSS and outscored the Saints 7-0 in second-chance points.

St. Scholastica would not get closer than 10 in the second half and River Falls ended the game on a 16-5 run to win by a final margin of 69-43.

The Saints ended up shooting 30 percent from the field for the game, while the Falcons finished at 40 percent. CSS was 7-for-7 from the free throw line, but were out-rebounded 50-26 and outscored 13-0 in second-chance points.

Jonah Dahlman (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) led the Saints with 14 points. Johnson and Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) each added nine points. Stanley scored 19 points to pace the Falcons.

The Saints (0-3) will be at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium again tomorrow when they face the host and bridge rival University of Wisconsin-Superior at 5 p.m.
