Box Score DUBUQUE, Iowa (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team gave a valiant effort, but in the end fell to the fourth-ranked Loras College (Iowa) Duhawks 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at the Rock Bowl.
Much like the women's game last night, the Duhawks controlled play early in the first half even when the Saints earned a corner off the opening kickoff.
Loras would have a goal disallowed midway through the half when a free kick was headed in, but the side official ruled offside. After that sequence, the possession was split evenly with each team getting good offensive opportunities.
Loras kept the pressure on in the second half, but CSS goalkeeper
Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) made some tremendous saves to keep the Saints in it. The Duhawks would also hit a crossbar, but the contest remained scoreless.
The Duhawks finally broke through in the 85th minute when a battle between Hewitt and Johnny Rummelhart in the air off of a header was won by Rummelhart. Loras would end the Saints' season with a 1-0 victory.
Hewitt made 10 saves in the loss for the Saints. Dylan Milkent had one save to earn the win for the Duhawks. Loras outshot the Saints 30-4 in the contest. Loras (20-1-1) moves on to face North Park (Ill.) in the second round.
The Saints' season will end with an 18-5 overall record. CSS will say goodbye to seniors
Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) and
Mark Fehringer (Hancock, Mich./Home school).
