Men’s Soccer Hangs on to Defeat Knights

Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team defeated Martin Luther College 2-1 Friday afternoon in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action.

The Saints controlled the first half, outshooting the Knights 18-3, but managed to get only one goal as Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College)'s shot in the 40th minute hit the crossbar and managed to cross the goal line to make it 1-0 St. Scholastica at the half. It is the second consecutive game with a goal for Watt, who extends his points streak to six games.

CSS extended its lead to 2-0 less than 10 minutes into the second half as Kasey Bacso (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored an unassisted goal in the 55th minute.

The Knights (2-15-0, 1-12-0 UMAC) were much more aggressive in the second half having the advantage in shots, 13-9, and made things interesting late on a Ben Schone goal with 51 seconds left in regulation. However, the Saints prevailed by a score of 2-1 to remain unbeaten in league play.

Adam Hewitt (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux Catholic HS) made seven saves in the win, while Eric Hahn had 11 saves in the loss for Martin Luther. The Saints outshot the Knights 27-16.

The Saints (15-4-0, 13-0-0 UMAC) will be at Bethany Lutheran College tomorrow to close out the regular season. The action is scheduled to begin at noon in Mankato.
