Amys Breaks Record in Loss to LumberJills

| By:
Box Score The CSS women's basketball team fell to the Northland College LumberJills 76-48 in Ashland on Tuesday night despite a new team record from senior Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS).

Going into the game Amys was tied with Sherri Bierschbach with 129 career blocks.  Amys recorded two blocks vs. the 'Jills giving her 131 for her career and breaking the 12-year-old record.  Amys got the block with 12:00 minutes to go in the game then increased her record just two seconds later.

The loss to Northland (9-10, 4-4) creates a season split between the two teams who both won at home this season.  CSS defeated Northland in Duluth last month 61-57.

The 'Jills jumped out to an early lead with a three-pointer a minute into the game and throughout the next 13 minutes extended their lead to 19 at 28-9.

The Saints went basket for basket with Northland for a couple minutes but the LumberJills ended the half on a 7-0 run to take a 24 point lead into the half 37-13.

St. Scholastica came out in the second half and scored the first basket hoping for a turnaround but the 'Jills proceeded to catch fire once again and go on another 7-0 run early on.

The Saints answered quickly with an 8-0 run of their own but Northland's offense was too much tonight as they answered right back with a 11-3 run to extend the lead to 27 with just under 10 minutes left in the game.

The final 10 minutes of the game was filled with basket trading between the two teams until the final buzzer sounded as Northland downed the Saints by 28, 76-48.

Amys led the way for scoring as well as having all of the team's blocks as she scored 12 points.  The only other player in double figures in scoring for CSS on the night was Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) with 11.  Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) led the way with seven rebounds.

Northland shot 54.6% from the field and 71.4% from beyond the arc while CSS shot just 42.6% from the field.  The 'Jills also shot 21 more free throws than the Saints while sinking 18 more from the charity stripe.

The Saints (7-12, 5-3 UMAC) will be back in action this weekend when they travel to the Twin Cities to take on the Northwestern Eagles (6-13, 3-5 UMAC) on Friday at 5:30 p.m.  Stay tuned to csssaints.com for game coverage information.
