SUPERIOR, Wis. – The 14th-ranked St. Scholastica men's hockey team trailed 3-0 with less than nine minutes to go, but within a span of five minutes tied the game and came away with a 3-3 tie against bridge rival University of Wisconsin-Superior on Thursday night at Wessman Arena.
It didn't take long for the Yellowjackets to get on the scoreboard when Kyle Leahy scored one minute and three seconds into the game. That was the lone goal of the first period as both teams had eight shots on goal.
The 'Jackets went up 2-0 in the second period on a Justin Faryna goal a little over five minutes into the period. Superior controlled the second period, out-shooting the Saints 19-6 in the period.
In the third period, UWS scored again to make it 3-0 with 9:12 remaining on the second goal of the night by Kyle Leahy. For the next six minutes after the goal it would be all Saints.
The rally started on a
Paul Marcoux (Brandon, Manitoba /Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) tally 57 seconds after the Leahy goal to cut the margin to 3-1.
Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) and
Cody Danychuk (Biggar, Saskatchewan/Biggar HS (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) had the assists.
Two minutes later,
Alex Valenti (Blaine, Wash./Bellingham HS (Merritt-BCHL) ) put the puck in the net to make it a 3-2 game.
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) assisted. Then with 3:13 remaining, senior captain
Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) tied the contest at 3-3 with assists from Corcoran and Valenti.
Scoring opportunities were at a premium in overtime as the game ended in a 3-3 tie. For the Saints, they are unbeaten in their last six games and it is the second such streak this season. This the fourth tie of the season for CSS and in all four the Saints were the team to score the game-tying goal late in the third period. The 'Jackets are winless in their last six games.
In a cleanly played game, the teams combined for just three penalties with neither team converting a power-play opportunity. The Yellowjackets out-shot the Saints 36-19.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 33 saves for the Saints, while Drew Strandberg had 16 saves for the 'Jackets (8-8-4, 3-6-4 NCHA).
The Saints (11-5-4, 6-3-4 NCHA) will be in action again on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. The Blue Devils will face UW-Superior tomorrow night before playing the Saints.
