Box Score NEW ULM, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss the night before by defeating Martin Luther College 69-61 in a hard fought game on the road for its second conference win of the season Saturday evening.
The Saints and Knights would battle back and forth in the opening minutes of the game until the Saints took advantage of four consecutive missed shots by the Knights and capitalized on the ensuing possessions to take a 15-10 lead with 12:19 to play in the first half. The Saints would use this momentum to extend the lead to 31-23 to end the first half.
The Knights shot 0-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first half and only 38-percent from the field. The Saints would shoot 6-for-9 (67-percent) from beyond the arc and 38-percent from the field as well.
The second half was much closer as the Knights tried to chip away at the lead but were unable to get as close as six points and the Saints earned their first road conference game of the season winning by a score of 69-61 in front of a crowd of 207 spectators.
The Knights (0-12, 0-3 UMAC) would finish the game shooting 39-percent from the field, 9-percent from beyond the arc, and 75-percent from the charity stripe. The Knights would commit 12 turnovers on the night.
The Saints finished the game shooting 43-percent from the field, 36-percent from beyond the arc, and 76-percent from the charity stripe.
Brett Tester (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) earned a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) added 20 points, while
Derek Steve (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) had nine points and five assists. Galen Holzhueter had 24 points to pace the Knights.
The Saints (5-9, 2-1 UMAC) will host Crown College next Friday at home with tip time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. local time. That game can be viewed on csssaints.com via Game Central.
