Five different Saints scored in a 5-1 victory over the Northland College LumberJacks on Tuesday night in Ashland.
The victory over the 'Jacks (3-8-2) snaps a three-game Saints losing streak that dates back to exactly one month ago on December 10 when the streak started with a loss at St. Norbert.
Northland came out ready to play as Austin Southerland put in an unassisted goal just 4:59 into the game to give the LumberJacks an early 1-0 lead, a lead they would hold going into the first intermission.
Just as the 'Jacks did in the first period, the Saints were on the board just 5:11 into the second when
Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) scored on assists from
Chris Sinclair (Fort Frances, Ontario/Beaver Brae Secondary (Fort Frances-SIJHL) ) and
Brenden Bradbury (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Monticello HS/Vincent Massey Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) to tie the game up at one a piece.
Just over nine minutes later CSS capitalized on a power play opportunity when
Austin Brown (Lathrup Village, Mich./Legacy HS (Woodstock-MJAHL) ) found the back of the net on assists from
Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) and
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) to make it 2-1 Saints. Both goaltenders would hold strong for the final five minutes of the second and the score would remain 2-1 at the second intermission.
The Saints put it in high gear in the third period beginning with a short-handed goal at the 6:54 mark by
Eric Kraft (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS (Lake Superior State) ) on a
Brandon Nowakowski (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial HS (Calgary Royals-AJHL)) assist to give CSS a 3-1 lead.
St. Scholastica extended the lead just under three minutes later when
Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) scored on another Nowakowski assist to make it 4-1.
Daman Milsom (Kelowna, British Columbia/Mt. Boucherie Secondary (Westside-BCHL) ) was also credited with an assist on the play.
The Saints final goal came off the stick of the team's leading scorer Corcoran with 4:50 left to go on assists from Davis and
Stephane Phaneuf (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Paul’s HS (Winnipeg South-MJHL) ) to make it 5-1, a score that remained until the final buzzer sounded.
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 16 saves in the win as his record now improves to 5-5-2 on the year.
Corcoran's goal and assist extend his team leading point total to 22 on the season while Miller's goal moves him into a tie for second with 17 points. Davis' assists give him 16 points on four goals and 12 assists and Brown is right behind him with four goals and 11 assists. Nowakowski and Golanowski now have 13 and nine points respectively.
The Saints (8-5-2, 3-3-2 NCHA) will stay on the road as they travel to Stevens Point, Wis. this weekend to take on the conference foe Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers (8-7-2, 4-4-2 NCHA).
