The Saints men's soccer team stayed undefeated in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) but settled for a 0-0 double overtime tie against the Northwestern College Eagles in St. Paul on Friday.
The first of two meetings between the Saints and Eagles (3-5-2, 2-1-1 UMAC) was a windy one, affecting the trajectory of any ball kicked up high, including corner kicks.
The first half was a slow moving one as the two teams combined for only seven shots, with CSS having five and Northwestern getting two off. Of those shots, both teams only got one on goal. Both
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) and Eric Bocan only needed to make one save to send the teams into the halftime locker room scoreless.
The second half was an aggressive one as St. Scholastica was handed three yellow cards, to make their total four in regulation. Northwestern edged the Saints in the second half in shots on goal 3-2, but none of the five shots found the back of the net and the two teams headed into overtime.
In the overtime period, there was only one opportunity for either team, and that was a shot on goal by the Saints'
Kyle Farrar (Sevenoaks, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) in the 98th minute, but Bocan made the save and the Saints and Eagles were deadlocked in a 0-0 thriller going into double overtime.
The second overtime proved to be the same as the prior three periods as St. Scholastica was once again left with chances that came up empty on the way to the 0-0 finish.
Reed ended the game with four saves and a shutout, with a record now of 7-1-1. Bocan ended the game with three saves and a shutout for the Eagles.
Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) led the Saints with five shots on the afternoon.
The Saints (7-1-1, 4-0-1 UMAC) will be back in action right away again tomorrow at noon when they travel to St. Bonifacius to take on the Crown College Storm (4-3-0, 2-1-0 UMAC).
