MORRIS, Minn. – Senior
Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) scored in the 61st minute and
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) recorded his 31st career shutout in helping the St. Scholastica men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory on Friday at conference rival University of Minnesota-Morris.
Reed's 31st shutout breaks the previous program record held by Adam Whitehead (2004-07), who finished with 30 shutouts in his career. Last season, Reed broke another record held by Whitehead and that was shutouts in a season (13). Today's victory (47) also ties Reed with Whitehead for most career wins by a Saints goalkeeper.
The Cougars controlled the action early on, outshooting the Saints 7-0 in the first 20 minutes. Reed stopped three of those shots as the game went to halftime scoreless. The Saints did not have a shot on goal in the first half, but did not allow another Morris shot the rest of the half.
In the 61st minute,
Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS), who just came in on a substitution less than a minute prior put the first CSS shot on net and it was a good one to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) and
Kyle Farrar (Sevenoaks, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) had the assists.
The best scoring opportunity in the second half for the Cougars came early in the half with back-to-back shots on Reed, but he denied both attempts and Morris would be unable to have another shot on goal the rest of the game as the Saints prevailed 1-0.
Reed made five saves for his seventh victory of the season. Tyler Weber did not make a save in the loss for the Cougars. Morris (3-3-2, 2-1-0 UMAC) outshot the Saints 13-6 in the contest.
The Saints (7-1-0, 4-0-0 UMAC) will be on the road again next weekend when they face Northwestern College on Friday and Crown College on Saturday. The Northwestern contest is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Friday.
