MOORHEAD, Minn. – A pair of second half goals just over five minutes apart gave the St. Scholastica men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Augustana College (Ill.) on Saturday in the Cobber Classic, hosted by Concordia College-Moorhead.
The Vikings got on the board first with exactly 16 minutes left in the first half on a Jason Beckus goal. Augustana had a 7-4 shot advantage in the first half.
The Saints got things going in the 62nd minute when
Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) scored his first collegiate goal to tie the contest at 1-1.
Kyle Farrar (Sevenoaks, England/Kelsey Park Sports College) had the assist. Just five minutes and 20 seconds later
Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) netted his first goal of the season to give CSS the 2-1 lead. Farrar and
Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) had the assists.
The Vikings had chances late with two shots on goal in the final two minutes, but
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) stopped both, including one in the final seconds to give the Saints the 2-1 victory.
Augustana had a 15-10 shots advantage in the contest. Reed made seven saves to earn the victory for the Saints. Tyler Cowherd had four saves in the loss for the Vikings. This was the first meeting between the two programs. The Vikings suffer their first defeat of the season and fall to 2-1-0.
The Saints (3-1-0) will open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play on Tuesday when they travel to Northland College and play the LumberJacks. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
