Women’s Tennis Hits the 20-Win Mark

DULUTH, Minn. – For just the third time in program history and the first time since the 2006 season, the St. Scholastica women's tennis team has recorded 20 wins in a season with a 9-0 victory over Northwestern College on Saturday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.

The Saints, who had already clinched the conference regular season title a couple of weeks ago, run their record to 20-4 overall and finish with an unblemished Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) record of 10-0. The 20 wins are the third-most in program history and CSS runs its conference dual match win streak to 91 matches. The Eagles fall to 6-11 (6-3 UMAC).

A couple of seniors playing in their final home matches teamed up at No. 1 doubles as the duo of Callee Conda (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (UW-Green Bay)) and Danni Sonnenfeld (Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) won 8-3. Conda and Sonnenfeld have won 11 straight doubles matches. Allie Carlson (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin HS) and Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) pulled out a win at the No. 2 spot 8-4. Lastly at No. 3, Liz Coyne (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and Jill Kammerer (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) prevailed 8-1.

In singles play, Conda extended her winning streak to 10 matches at the No. 1 position 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2, Sonnenfeld won her 11th in a row by scores of 6-4, 6-1.

Amanda Hiatt (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) at No.3, Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) at No. 4, Ali Bernst (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) at No. 5, and Aleksandra Ochrymowicz (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary’s Academy) at No. 6 all won by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Bungarden has won 18 straight singles matches and Hiatt has won 11 straight.

The Saints will take part in the UMAC Championships next Friday and Saturday in Minneapolis at the Baseline Tennis Center. Doubles play will take place Friday with singles taking place on Saturday. Action begins Friday at 4 p.m. and continues Saturday at 9 a.m.
