DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team captured its 15th consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship on Sunday with a pair of 9-0 victories over the University of Minnesota-Morris.
The Saints (19-4, 9-0 UMAC) have won 12 straight matches and run their UMAC win streak to 90 straight overall. The 12 consecutive wins are the second-longest streak in program history with the record being 15 set in 2006. The Cougars fall to 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the conference after the two losses.
The reason the teams played a doubleheader on Sunday was because the dual match scheduled for April 3rd in Morris was postponed.
#Callee Conda# won a pair of matches at No. 1 singles on the day and the same goes for #Danni Sonnenfeld# at No. 2 singles. The two also teamed up to win twice at No. 1 doubles for the pair's 10th straight win. Sonnenfeld moved into third all-time in program history with 53 career singles wins.
#Milly Che Leon#, #Amanda Hiatt#, #Hillary Bungarden#, and #Ali Bernst# all won easily in singles in the opening match, dropping a total of two games combined. Bungarden and Hiatt also teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles 8-0 and Bernst played with #Allie Carlson# to win at No. 3 doubles 8-2.
In the nightcap, Hiatt and #Kelli Johnson# won at No. 2 doubles 8-0. The No. 3 team of #Kelsey Geiger# and #Liz Coyne# also blanked their opponents 8-0.
In other singles action in the second match, #Aleksandra Ochrymowicz# won by shutout 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. #Megan Lawrence# won at No. 4 by scores of 6-1, 6-3. #Pamela Hartley# came from behind to win at the No. 5 position 3-6, 6-3, (10-4). At No. 6, #Jill Kammerer# was the final winner on the day 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
The Saints will have next week off and will play their final dual match of the regular season on Saturday, April 30th at home against Northwestern College.
