DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team took its first two matches of the season on Sunday, defeating both Saint Mary's University and Bemidji State University at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.
The Saints began the day with a 6-3 victory over Saint Mary's University in the morning. The Saints swept doubles play to begin. The No. 1 team of #Callee Conda# and #Milly Che Leon# won 9-7. The No. 2 team of #Hillary Bungarden# and #Kelli Johnson# won 8-2 and the No. 3 team of #Danni Sonnenfeld# and #Amanda Hiatt# won 8-1.
The Cardinals took the top three spots in singles action. At No. 4,
Danni Sonnenfeld (Harris, Minn./North Branch HS)'s 6-4, 5-7, (10-5) victory clinched the dual win for the Saints.
Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won at the No.5 spot 6-1, 6-1 and
Amanda Hiatt (St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) took care of business at No. 6 flight 6-0, 6-3.
In the afternoon, the Saints edged Bemidji State University 5-4. The Saints took two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Conda and Sonnenfeld won 8-2. The No. 2 team of #Ali Bernst# and #Allie Carlson# defeated their opponents 8-4.
In singles play, Conda won at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 singles,
Danni Sonnenfeld (Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) came from behind to win 4-6, 6-2, (10-5) to finish 4-0 in doubles and singles on the day. #Megan Lawrence# was the other winner against the Beavers, winning at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-2.
The Saints will be at Concordia-Moorhead next Sunday. The action will begin at 2 p.m.
