HOUGHTON, Minn. – Senior #Waylon Manske# led the St. Scholastica men's Nordic skiing team in both the skate and classic races on Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional Skiing Championships, hosted by Michigan Tech University.
The reason why both races took place on the same day was because the freestyle race was supposed to take place on Friday, but high winds postponed those races.
In the morning 10km freestyle race, Manske placed 13th with a time of 27:40.1 seconds. #Scott Johanik# finished 17th in a time of 28:08 seconds. Right behind him was #Jeremy Hecker# at 28:11.9 seconds.
Northern Michigan's Martin Baanerud won the freestyle race with a time of 26:11.3 seconds. Northern Michigan took the team title in skate race with 87 points. The Saints finished fourth with 56 points.
In the afternoon 10km classic race,
Waylon Manske (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS) “had the best classic race of his life,” according to head coach #Chad Salmela#, placing 10th overall to earn all-region laurels. Manske finished with a time of 28:50.4 seconds.
With his finishes, Manske has an outside chance for qualifying for the NCAA Skiing Championships, but will not find out until sometime Sunday or Monday morning.
The Saints had four skiers place in the top 22 in the classic race. #Kasey Bacso# was 19th with a time of 29:53.9 seconds.
Scott Johanik (Washburn, Wis./Washburn HS ) was 21st, posting a time of 30:03.3 seconds.
Jeremy Hecker (Andover, Minn./Andover HS (Minnesota-Twin Cities)) was two seconds back of him in 22nd.
Northern Michigan's Baanerud made it a clean sweep on the day, winning the classic in a time of 27:40.4 seconds. Northern Michigan also took the classic title with 86 points. The Saints were fourth with 57 points.
If Manske does not qualify for nationals, the Saints' season will come to an end. For future news on the CSS men's Nordic skiing program, check out csssaints.com.
