Men's Hockey Stumbles in Tournament Opener

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team stumbled in the opening game of its Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Peters Cup Tournament series against its bridge rivals from the University of Wis.-Superior on Friday night, falling by a 4-2 final at Wessman Arena.

The Saints (9-16-1) will need a victory tomorrow night to force a series-deciding mini game if they want to advance past the Yellowjackets (14-11-1) into the Peters Cup semifinals.

The Yellowjackets scored the first three goals of the game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Kyle Leahy and Pat Dalbec scored even-strength goals at 6:19 and 8:18 respectively, with Justin Faryna scoring a powerplay tally later in theperiod.

Despite being out-shot ten to seven in the second frame, the Saints score the lone goal of the period – a #Carter Davis# score, assisted by #Brett Corcoran# and #Daman Milsom#.

CSS pulled within one at the 14:26 mark of the third as #Joel Langevin# scored with an assist by #Brandon Nowakowski#.

The Saints out-shot the Yellowjackets 13-7 in the third, but an empty-net goal secured victory for UWS in the closing seconds of the period.

#Patrick Sullivan# suffered the loss in-net for the Saints, stopping 25 of 28 shots. Drew Strandberg made 24 saves to earn the victory for the Yellowjackets.

CSS finished with just one penalty on the night for two minutes, while UWS had two for four. The Yellowjackets scored on their lone opportunity while holding the Saints scoreless in two.

The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night in a must-win game for St. Scholastica. If the Saints win, a one-period mini-game will follow to determine who moves on to the next round of the NCHA Peters Cup tournament. All of the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio-560 WEBC.
