NEW ULM, Minn. – The St Scholastica men's basketball team fought hard to force overtime against Martin Luther College, but ran out of gas in the extra session losing 92-85 on Friday night.
In the first 10 minutes of the game, there were six lead changes and three tied scores. With a little over seven minutes left in the first half, Martin Luther (6-14, 5-6 UMAC) went on a 10-2 run to push its lead to 33-21 with 4:14 left. After the Knights' run, St. Scholastica (9-13, 6-5 UMAC) responded with a run of its own, by going on an 11-4 run to end the first period. The Knights took a 37- 32 lead into the locker rooms.
The Saints #Danny Schmitz# was the game's leading point getter in the first half with 12. The Knights' Josh Dannell had a team-high eight points. Martin Luther shot 42-percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, while CSS went 39-percent. The Knights got a huge boost from their bench with 19 points in the first half, while the Saints got seven.
Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) got the Saints going quickly in the second half by sinking a 3-pointer to cut the Knights lead to 37-35. The Saints would hang around close to the Knights in the first five minutes, but with 15:28 remaining in the game Martin Luther would go on an 11-0 run to push its lead to 60-48 with 12:48 remaining.
The Saints started their comeback with a little over eleven minutes left in the game, and the score at 64-52 Knights. The Saints would go on a 17-5 run to tie the score at 69-69 with 6:13 remaining in the game.
With 25 seconds remaining in the game, and #Jonah Dahlman# at the charity line for a chance to cut the Knights lead to one, he would miss the free throw attempt, but #Logan Schultz# got the rebound. After a Saints timeout, #Derek Anderson# had a chance to give the Saints the lead, but missed on a 3-point shot, but Schultz grabbed yet another crucial rebound, and was fouled. With nine seconds remaining in the game Schultz sunk both free throw attempts to send the game into overtime.
With less than two minutes left in overtime the score was tied at 85-85, the Saints would go 1-for-9 shooting, including free throws. The Knights ended the night on a 7-0 run to win the game 92-85.
Danny Schmitz (Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson HS) and Martin Luther's Greg Holzhueter led the game with 18 points each. Both the Saints and the Knights shot 46-percent from the field. The Saints would only shoot 55-percent from the charity line for the game, while the Knights were 74-percent. The Saints would dominate the paint, by scoring 42 points, yet the Knights dominated points off the bench, by getting 34 points.
This is the first time this season that all five starters for the Saints would score double-digit points. This was
Logan Schultz (Perham, Minn./Perham HS)' first career double-double for the Saints as he had a career-high 15 rebounds to along with 16 points.
The Saints will their final road game of the regular season tomorrow when they play at Bethany Lutheran College. The action is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
