Women’s Basketball Wins Big for First Victory of the Year

Box Score MINNEAPOLIS – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team had six players score in double figures on its way to a 94-41 victory Tuesday night over North Central University (Minn.).

Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) scored the first five points of the game for the Saints and CSS never looked back, as it did not trail in the game. The Rams got within one at 9-8, but the Saints responded with an 11-1 run. CSS then closed the first half on a 23-3 run to take a 49-17 lead into the locker room.

The Saints shot 50-percent from the field in the half, including 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. Elena Huber (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) was 3-for-3 alone on 3-point attempts. Both Huber and Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had 13 points in the half. CSS outscored North Central 20-2 in the paint and 13-0 in fast break points.

The Saints would score the first seven points of the second half to extend its margin to 39 points. St. Scholastica had runs of 7-0 and 9-0 in the second half and would win by the highest margin of the game of 53 points by a final score of 94-41.

The Saints finished with a shooting percentage of 49-percent, a season high. The Saints also made eight, 3-pointers with Huber finishing 4-for-4. They were also 70-percent (14-for-20) from the free throw line. The sixth time this season the Saints shot 70-percent or better from the charity stripe. CSS forced 17 North Central turnovers, which led to 17 points.

Hovick paced the Saints with 17 points and also recorded eight steals. Huber was next with 16 points. Both Amys and Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) recorded 13 points and eight rebounds. Kayla Heisler (Remer, Minn./Northland HS) and Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) each chipped in with 11 points. The CSS bench outscored the Rams' bench 48-4.

The Rams (2-5), who had a two-game winning streak snapped, shot 24-percent for the game and were led by Jorie Grenell with 12 points.

The Saints (1-6) will finally be back home for the just the second time this season when they host Finlandia University (Mich.) on Saturday. It will be the only home game until January 10th for the Saints. The tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Reif Gymnasium and can be seen live at csssaints.com.
