Women’s Basketball Falls in Border Battle

Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell behind early and weren't able to overcome a large deficit losing to twin ports rival University of Wisconsin-Superior 82-68 Saturday evening at Mertz Mortorelli Gym in Superior.

The Saints fell behind early in the opening minutes and would not be able to overcome a quick start by the Yellowjackets who jumped out to a 41-18 lead.  The Saints were able to close the half on a 15-4 run to make it 45-33 at the end of the first half.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle with each team trading basket for basket.  The Saints crawled back within nine points, but three straight 3-pointers by the Yellowjackets built a lead that sealed the deal and the Saints lost 82-68.

For the Saints, Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) had a team-high 16 points, while Kayla Heisler (Remer, Minn./Northland HS) and Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) had 14 and 10 points, respectively.  Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) added nine points as well. Amys also broke her own program record with seven blocks and led the team with second rebounds.

The Saints shot 40-percent from the field and were 85-percent from the charity stripe.  The Saints committed 27 total turnovers, compared to 20 by the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (5-5) had five players score in double figures as the team shot 40-percent from the field and 68-percent from the charity stripe. UWS outrebounded the Saints 54-32, including 26-9 on the offensive glass.

The Saints (2-7) will travel to St. Louis, Missouri to face Webster University on Friday, December 30.  The game is set to start at 5 p.m. local time.
