The Saints men's soccer team shutout the Northwestern College Eagles Saturday afternoon at Saints Field 1-0 to finish the season undefeated in conference play.
The victory over the Eagles (9-8-2, 8-3-1 UMAC) gives CSS the season series victory as well, since the two teams tied earlier this year in St. Paul.
Neither team scored in the first matchup this year, and the first half of this one was much of the same story. The Saints outshot the Eagles 5-0 in the first half, but Eagle goalkeeper Eric Bocan made two saves and both teams went into halftime scoreless.
The scoreless season between the two teams ended early in the second half when
Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) scored on a deep strike from
Braeden Hidalgo-Mazzei (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Kildonan East Collegiate) in the 50th minute. This ended a streak of 188:20 with no goals in games between the Eagles and Saints dating back to last season.
For Trochimchuk it was goal number six on the season giving him 16 total points now, and Hidalgo-Mazzei's assist gives him four points on the year.
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) was the goalkeeper on record for the Saints earning his ninth shutout of the season and improving to 14-3-1 in 2011. It was career shutout number 37 and win number 54 for Reed, both CSS all-time records.
The Saints (15-3-1, 11-0-1 UMAC) will be back in action right away again on Tuesday when they host the Crown College Storm (9-9, 6-6 UMAC) in the semi-final game of the UMAC Tournament at 2 p.m. The action can be seen live on GameCentral at csssaints.com.
