The Saints men's soccer team clinched the regular season Upper Midwest Athletic Conference title as they defeated Crown College Storm 2-0 at Saints Field on Friday afternoon.
With the win over Crown (8-9-0, 5-6-0 UMAC) the Saints clinched the top seed in the conference tournament, and have another date with the Storm next Tuesday.
The Saints didn't waste any time in this one as senior captain
Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) put a header in the back of the net off of a
Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) cross just 13 minutes into the game.
The rest of the first half was a quiet one as the Saints held the Storm without a shot and the two teams went into halftime with the Saints leading 1-0.
The second half started off a little slow as well until there was a penalty called on Crown goalkeeper Chris Scanlon in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Watt. Watt went on to make the penalty kick to give the Saints a 2-0 lead that they would take to the end of the game for the victory.
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) made two saves on his way to another shutout, now with a record 13-3-1 on the season.
Watt's goal and assist give him 30 points now on the season and Stemwedel's goal gets him up to 24.
The Saints (14-3-1, 10-0-1 UMAC) will be in action again tomorrow at Saints Field when they host the Northwestern College Eagles (9-7-2, 8-2-1 UMAC) at 3 p.m. The game can be seen live on GameCentral at csssaints.com.
