Tyler Miller (Fort Frances, Ontario/Rainy River HS (Thunder Bay-SIJHL) ) tied the game with 16 seconds left and new goaltender
Colin Rundell (Tees, Alberta/Lacombe Composite (Alaska-Fairbanks) ) made 47 saves as the St. Scholastica men's hockey team battled ninth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Superior to a 4-4 tie on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Yellowjackets are ranked ninth in the preseason USCHO.com Division III poll and were picked second in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) preseason coaches' poll. The Saints, on the other hand, were picked seventh in the preseason coaches' poll. The 'Jackets took four of the five meetings last against CSS.
Superior got on the board first halfway through the first period on a Pat Dalbec goal. The Saints responded four minutes later on a
Chad Golanowski (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll HS (Calgary Canucks-AJHL) ) power-play goal as the teams were tied 1-1 at the first intermission.
Then with just 10 seconds left in the second period,
Brett Corcoran (Parksville, British Columbia/Ballenas Secondary (Trail Smoke-BCHL) ) scored another power-play to goal to put the Saints up 2-1. At the end of the two periods, the Yellowjackets had outshot the Saints 30-18.
Business picked up in the third period. Kyle Leahy tied the game for the Yellowjackets six minutes into the period. However, that didn't last long as Corcoran netted his second of the night 37 seconds later to put the Saints back up 3-2.
Brett Meyers tied the game for the 'Jackets with 11:40 on the clock with an even-strength goal. Superior then went ahead 4-3 with three minutes left on a Joey Massingham goal.
CSS then pulled Rundell with just over one minute to play and with the extra attacker, Miller would get the puck in the net with 16 seconds left to tie the game at 4-4.
Overtime, would prove to be just as exciting as the third period with Rundell making a couple of great saves and both teams having scoring opportunities up-and-down the ice, but the game would end in a 4-4 tie.
Garrett Tinkham made 24 saves for the Yellowjackets, who outshot the Saints 51-28 for the game.
The Saints and Yellowjackets will play game two of the weekend series tomorrow night at Mars Lakeview Arena. The action begins at 7:05 p.m. and can be seen live on csssaints.com.
