The St. Scholastica football team set a new scoring record for the third time this season in a huge 70-20 victory over the Presentation College Saints at the Metrodome on Friday Night.
This was the first ever Saints/Saints matchup for football in this, Presentation's (3-5, 3-4 UMAC) inaugural year. St. Scholastica once again broke multiple records on the day including most total offense with 700 yards, most rushing yards with 407, most yards per carry at 9.5, and most rushing touchdowns with six.
CSS didn't waste any time scoring in this one as
Thomas Fragale (Loxahatchee, Fla./Seminole Ridge HS) ran the ball in from nine yards out to put them ahead 6-0 with 8:37 left in the first quarter. The point after attempt by
Mike Theismann (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo HS) was good to make it a 7-0 lead.
Presentation would answer on the very next drive taking it 61 yards in 11 plays, capped off with a one-yard touchdown run by Dillon Wasko. Gavin Voss' extra point was good and the two teams were all knotted up at seven.
CSS didn't let that last long as
Alex Thiry (Cambridge, Minn./Braham HS (Minn.-Duluth)) found
Keegan O'Neill (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) for a 45-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter. Theismann's extra point was good making it 14-7 CSS.
St. Scholastica would score three more times in the second quarter on touchdown passes from Thiry to
Nick Thiry (Braham, Minn./Braham HS) (40 yds), O'Neill again (39 yds) and
Jonny Bennett (Blackduck, Minn./Blackduck HS) (25 yds). All of the point after attempts were good and the Saints and Saints went into halftime with CSS leading 35-7.
On the opening drive of the second half for CSS, Fragale found the end zone once again but this time on a 61-yard run just 19 seconds into the third quarter. Theismann remained perfect on the day and it was 42-0 CSS.
Later in the third quarter St. Scholastica would take a few minutes longer to get there, but eventually score on a four-yard touchdown run by
Travis Nehowig (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS). The point after was again good making it 49-7 CSS.
On the ensuing kickoff, Presentation's Jalanni James would take the return 84 yards for the touchdown and with the point after cut the lead to 49-14 St. Scholastica.
St. Scholastica would answer right back when Nehowig would again take the ball in for a four-yard touchdown run, and with the extra point making it 56-14 CSS.
St. Scholastica would score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on touchdown runs by Fragale (17 yds) and Matt Johnson (6 yds) to make the score 70-14 CSS with the extra points, making Theismann a perfect 10-10 on the evening.
Presentation can be credited with never giving up on this game, as Stephen Braswell found Sean Haderlie on the last play of the game for a 28-yard touchdown, and the score would stand to be a final at 70-20, St. Scholastica.
A Thiry ended the game with impressive numbers once again going 13-17 with 257 yards and four touchdowns, and yet again no interceptions in this one. Still just one interception on the year for Thiry.
Justin Bosman (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) also completed one pass for 36 yards.
Nehowig is now second in CSS history for rushing yards in a game as he ran the ball 25 times for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Fragale also put up impressive numbers as he ran the ball seven times for 105 yards and three touchdowns.
Alex Hiess (Chippewa Falls, Wis./McDonell HS) got seven carries for 44 yards, Johnson had two for 20 yards and a touchdown and A. Thiry rounded out the rushing attack with 11 yards.
O'Neill led the receiving attack for CSS bringing in six passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns. N. Thiry had three catches for 77 yards and a touchdown, Fragale had two catches for 35 yards,
Cory Gebhard (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls HS) had a catch for 35 yards, Bennett had just one catch but it was for a 25-yard touchdown and Nehowig added nine yards to round out the receiving for CSS.
JP Leary (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) led St. Scholastica in tackling with 5.5 on the evening.
Justin Trautmiller (Somerset, Wis./Somerset HS) added five and team leader
Sean Graskey (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) had four on the day. Graskey also had a fumble recovery on the day as did
Jake Turkowski (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) and
Samora Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Milwaukee Pius XI (UW-Whitewater)).
Chas Lemon (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) added an interception to up St. Scholastica's nation leading turnover margin to +22.
St. Scholastica (8-0, 7-0 UMAC) will be back home next Saturday for senior day when they play host to the Martin Luther Knights (2-7, 2-6 UMAC) at Public Schools Stadium at 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on GameCentral at csssaints.com.
