It took overtime for the Saints men's soccer team to defeat the Bethany Lutheran Vikings 2-1 in Mankato, Minn. on Friday afternoon.
The overtime win over the Vikings (5-10-0, 3-7-0 UMAC) improves the Saints overtime record to 2-2-1 on the season.
The Saints began the scoring six minutes into the game when
Caleb Yurek (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) scored his first collegiate goal on a header from an
Erik Trochimchuk (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold HS) corner kick.
Both teams' defenses held strong the rest of the half and CSS went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
The second half was stagnant for both teams until late in the 62nd minute when the Vikings' Juan Garcia scored on a Joe Nuah assist to tie the game 1-1.
The Saints had chances after the Bethany goal, but the Vikings' goalkeeper Noah Heidorn made three saves from that point on to stop the Saints and the game moved into overtime tied at one.
The Saints didn't waste much time in overtime as
Brandon Stemwedel (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) scored two minutes in off of a
Joe Watt (London, England/North West Kent College) assist to give CSS the 2-1 win.
For Stemwedel it was game winning goal number four on the season and he remains at third on the team with 19 points. Watt's assist gives him 23 points on the season, sitting as the second leading scorer on the team.
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) made one save in the winning effort and improved his record to 11-3-1 on the season.
The Saints (12-3-1, 8-0-1 UMAC) will take the field again tomorrow when they travel to New Ulm, Minn. to take on the Martin Luther Knights (4-12-0, 2-8-0 UMAC) at 2 p.m.
