RUMFORD, Maine – Senior #Waylon Manske# finished 44th in the men's 30km freestyle at the U.S. National Championships on Thursday.
CXC Elite Team member, Tad Elliott, spoiled Alaska Pacific University's Lars Flora's attempt to give himself a birthday present and make it a second U.S. National Championship title in as many days. Elliott's charge for the line earned him his second national title by a mere tenth of a second over Flora. The U.S. Ski Team's Noah Hoffman finished third.
For the second day in a row, Alaska-Fairbanks raced impressively with Alexander Treinen taking the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) honors in sixth overall, with teammate, David Norris, finishing 11th overall to take second in the CCSA race. Northern Michigan's Andy Liebner finished third. Manske finished ninth on the day in the CCSA. Senior teammate #Mason Bacso# finished 16th in CCSA competition.
The field was thinned by a separate 10km event held for juniors (age 19 and under) trying to qualify for the U.S. Junior World Championship team. Manske and Bacso were the only Saints in the 30km event.
“Waylon skied a lot better and put to rest some of our fears after yesterday,” said Saints coach #Chad Salmela#. “This is Waylon's strong suit, though 30km is not a distance we race often. It was nice to see him step it up today.”
The Saints host CCSA Qualifier No. 2 January 15th and 16th at the Marshall School in Duluth.
