MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Sophomore #Jeremy Hecker# led the St. Scholastica men's Nordic Skiing team on the first day of competition at the USSA SuperTour Men's 10km freestyle and Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis.
Hecker finished in a time of 26:14.2 to place 27th overall in the SuperTour field and 12th in the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) field.
Olympian Garrott Kuzzy took top honors in SuperTour, winning in a time of 23:05.8. He edged CXC teammate, Matt Liebcsh by four seconds. Sylvan Ellefson of Vail, Colo. finished third.
Alaska Fairbanks' Ray Sabo won the CCSA college race in a time of 24:45.5, finishing ninth overall in the SuperTour. Northern Michigan's Andy Liebner finished second in the CCSA competition 6.9 seconds shy of Sabo. Teammate Martin Banerud finished another 3.2 seconds back to take third.
Saints freshman, #Scott Johanik#, posted his best CCSA finish in 15th, just 4.2 seconds behind Hecker, in a time of 26:18.4. Sophomore #Kelin Dunfee#, in only his third varsity start for the Saints, rounded out the team scoring, finishing 21st in a time of 26:54.1. The Saints men finished fourth as a team behind winner, Northern Michigan, runner up, Alaska Fairbanks, and Michigan Tech.
The Saints continue competition at Wirth Park with the men's 15km classic mass start on Sunday.
