Women’s Basketball Holds off Vikings in Conference Home Opener

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was able to outlast Bethany Lutheran College on Friday night at Reif Gymnasium, winning 66-58 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) home opener.

The Saints (4-8, 1-1 UMAC) used a pair of 6-0 runs in the first seven minutes to open up a 15-7 lead. Later in the half, CSS went on a 12-4 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 29-15. The Vikings (5-7, 1-1 UMAC) responded by going on a 7-0 run to cut the margin to seven, but the Saints still went into halftime with a 31-22 edge.

St. Scholastica shot 37-percent in the first half and held Bethany Lutheran to 23-percent shooting. The Saints forced 11 BLC turnovers, which led to 15 points. #Taylor Fellbaum# had 11 first-half points.

The Saints maintained their lead for the first six minutes of the second half until the Vikings went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 41-41 with 10 minutes to go. BLC then briefly took a one-point lead with eight minutes left, but the Saints took it right back on a #Caitlin McKernon# layup on the proceeding possession.

CSS lengthened its lead back to eight and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to defeat the Vikings 66-58.

The Saints shot 38-percent for the game, while holding the Vikings to 33-percent. BLC went 0-for-7 from beyond the arc for the game. CSS committed a season-low 12 turnovers.

Taylor Fellbaum (Minong, Wis./Northwood HS) and Caitlin McKernon (Coon Rapids, Minn./Fridley HS) each had season-highs of 13 points to lead the Saints. #Erin Morstad# recorded 10 points, five assists, and five rebounds for a good all-around effort in just her second game this season. #Laura Amys# and #Bri Allen# each had six rebounds to lead the team. Nicole Jones and Jessica Englund each had double-doubles with each scoring 18 points.
