DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team defeated Gustavus Adolphus 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in the 2010 Advantage Emblem Cup to earn its first win of 2010.
Prior to today's triumph, the Saints (1-2) had suffered a pair of close losses, one in overtime and the other in the final minute of regulation.
CSS got on the board early as in the seventh minute #Toby Peter# (
Sr.-Spalt, Germany/J.S. Bach) netted his first goal of 2010 off of a corner by #Brandon Stemwedel# (
Jr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.). The Saints out-shot the Gusties (1-1) in the opening 45 minutes of action, 3-1.
Early in the second half with St. Scholastica still holding on to a 1-0 advantage, 5-foot-7-inches #Dustin James# (
Sr.-Superior, Wis.) skied over everyone to head in #Jermaine Dacres#' (
Sr.-Nottingham, England/Haywood) corner to make it 2-0 CSS. That was the only shot the Saints would get on net in the half, as Gustavus fired five shots towards the Saints' net and #Sam Reed# (
Jr.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway) stopped the two that got on goal to preserve the 2-0 shutout victory.
For Reed, that's his 16th career shutout and 25th career victory. Steve Lundberg picked up the loss for the Gusties.
The Saints finished in second place in the Advantage Emblem Cup with 10 points. Concordia-Moorhead took the men's crown with 18 points. James, Peter, and Reed were all named to the all-tournament team.
St. Scholastica will be in action next on Saturday when it travels to face Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
