ST. PAUL – Senior #Jermaine Dacres# scored 2:08 seconds into overtime as the St. Scholastica men's soccer team extended its win streak to six games with a 2-1 win over the University of St. Thomas on Tuesday.
This was the second win for the Saints against the Tommies in series history and the first since the 1994 season.
After a relatively quiet first half, which saw the Tommies (4-4) out-shoot the Saints 8-4, CSS (6-2) struck for a goal five minutes into the second half as #Dustin James# found the net unassisted.
However, the Tommies would even the match in the 70th minute on an Elliot Amundson goal. The shots were even 6-6 in the second half, but the Saints had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
90 minutes was not enough to settle the score so we went to overtime. In overtime, St. Thomas put the first shot on net a little over a minute in, but #Sam Reed# made the save.
The Saints countered and
Jermaine Dacres (Nottingham, England/Haywood School) was able to get a shot on net and put it past the goalkeeper to give the Saints the 2-1 victory.
For James it was his second goal of the season, while Dacres netted his third.
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) improved to 5-2 on the year, making a career-high nine saves. Alex Benson had three saves in the loss for the Tommies.
The Saints will be back at home and back in conference play this weekend when they host Minnesota-Morris on Saturday and Presentation College on Sunday. Both games will start at approximately 2 p.m., following the women's game. They can be seen live, courtesy of the iFan Sports Network, at csssaints.com.
