DULUTH, Minn. – Macalester College got revenge for last year's overtime loss by defeating the St. Scholastica men's soccer team 1-0 in overtime Wednesday evening.
In a relatively evenly played contest, neither squad would get on the scoreboard in the first 90 minutes of action. Both teams had three shots in each half and four shots on goal for the game entering the overtime session.
Macalester came out more aggressive than they showed all game at the start of the overtime period, getting a shot-on-goal 42 seconds in and then capitalizing on the game winner 1:16 into overtime. Reid Usedom received the cross from Chris Kartheiser and put it in, just inside the far post.
#Sam Reed# (
Jr.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway) had five saves in the loss for the Saints. Matt Weyer earns the shutout victory for the Scots. #Toby Peter# (
Sr.-Spalt, Germany/J.S. Bach) had two shots on goal to lead CSS.
This is the first season-opening loss for the Saints since the 2006 season. CSS falls to 2-5-0 all-time against the Scots.
