DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated conference-foe Martin Luther College to begin the day on Saturday, but fell to No. 9 Gustavus Adolphus in the nightcap.
The Saints began the day with a 9-0 victory over Martin Luther in conference action. The Saints have now won 75 straight UMAC matches.
CSS cruised through the double action as the No. 1 team of #Callee Conda# (
Jr.-Hibbing, Minn.) and #Danni Sonnenfeld# (
Jr.-Harris, Minn./North Branch) won 8-1. The No. 2 team of #Katie Motley# (
Sr.-Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) and #Kelly Ross# (
Sr.-Buffalo, Minn.) won 8-2 and the No. 3 team of #Angela Shields# (
Sr.-Pengilly, Minn./Greenway) and #Megan Carlson# (
Sr.-Pine City, Minn.) also won 8-2.
Motley and Conda at No. 1 singles, respectively, won by identical 6-1, 6-1 scores. Motley now has 51 career singles wins, which is tied for second in program history.
Sonnenfeld at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-0 and the scores were flip-flopped at No.4 with Ross winning 6-0, 6-1.Shields prevailed at the No. 5 spot 6-1, 6-1 and Carlson cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 flight.
Later in the afternoon against Gustavus Adolphus, the Saints fell 9-0. The Gusties are ranked ninth in the nation and fourth in the central region, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Saints had the same lineup as earlier in the day against Martin Luther, but the Gusties took every match in straight sets.
The Saints will be split again tomorrow when half of the team will play at the University of Minnesota-Morris, while the other half will compete against Luther College (Iowa) in Minneapolis.
