WOMEN’S TENNIS SPLITS ON FIRST DAY IN ORLANDO

ORLANDO, Fla. – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team defeated Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) to begin the day on Monday, but then fell to Augustana College (S.D.) to end the day. 

The Saints opened the trip with an 8-1 victory over NAIA's Saint Ambrose University. CSS took two of the three doubles matches and swept all six singles matches.

In doubles play, the No. 2 team of #Danni Sonnenfeld# (Jr.-Harris, Minn./North Branch) and #Callee Conda# (Jr.-Hibbing, Minn.) won 8-3. The No. 3 doubles team of #Angela Shields# (Sr.-Pengilly, Minn./Greenway) and #Megan Carlson# (Sr.-Pine City, Minn.) won 8-2.

The Saints won all six singles matches in straight sets. At No. 1, #Katie Motley# (Sr.-Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) won 6-0, 6-2. Motley needs just two more doubles or singles victories to become the winningest Saints tennis player of all-time.

Callee Conda (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (UW-Green Bay)) won at the No. 2 spot 6-1, 6-0 and Danni Sonnenfeld (Harris, Minn./North Branch HS) took her match at the No. 3 flight 6-2, 6-3. At No. 4, #Kelly Ross# (Sr.-Buffalo, Minn.) downed her opponent 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) and at No. 5, Angela Shields (Pengilly, Minn./Greenway HS) had a 6-1, 6-1 triumph. #Katie Marcella# (Jr.-Virginia, Minn.) earned her first win of the season at the No. 6 spot with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

It was the complete opposite against Division II's Augustana College as the Saints fell 8-1. Augustana improved to 8-0 with the win and is ranked 10th in the central region in the Division II Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional rankings.

Callee Conda (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (UW-Green Bay)) was the lone winner for CSS as she rallied to win at No.2 singles 4-6, 6-3, (10-7). Kelly Ross (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) also forced a third-set tiebreak at No. 4 singles, but fell in the tiebreak 10-8.

The Saints will face the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in a key regional match.
