Saints Split Series with No. 15 Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team fell to its bridge rival in the No. 15 University of Wis.-Superior Yellowjackets by a 7-3 final on Saturday evening at Wessman Arena to earn a split in its weekend series.

The Saints fall to 6-7-0 on the season with the loss (2-6-0 NCHA). The Yellowjackets move to 8-4-1 (6-2-0 NCHA).

The 'Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead, out-shooting the Saints 9-7 in the opening frame.

The Saints jumped back into it, pulling within one just 1:40 into the second period when #Carter Davis# netted an unassisted tally.

The 2-1 score held late into the second period when Pat Dalbec netted a late powerplay goal for the Yellowjackets with just three seconds remaining in the frame.

The Saints went on the powerplay just 57 seconds into the third frame, but the Jackets battled back with a short-handed goal to stifle the Saints momentum. CSS turned the tables just 30 seconds later as #Alex Valenti# netted a powerplay goal with an assist from #Brendan Bradbury# to cut the lead to 4-2.

The Saints added an even-strength goal by #Tyler Miller# at the 8:41 mark of the third period, but three additional Yellowjacket goals in the final frame proved too much for the Saints offense to overcome.

#Patrick Sullivan# took the loss in net for the Saints, making 24 saves to total 54 in the series against the Yellowjackets. UWS goaltender Drew Strandberg stopped 22 of 25 shots by CSS.

The Saints finished with five penalties for ten minutes while the Yellowjackets finished with six for 12. CSS was one-for-five in powerplay opportunities while UWS finished two-for-four.

The Saints have now finished the 2010 portion of their season and will return to the ice on Jan. 7, 2011 when they play host to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) rival Bethel University. The puck will drop on the second half of the season at 7:05 p.m. at Mars Lakeview Arena.
