SUPERIOR, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team recorded a goal in each of the three periods and #Patrick Sullivan# stopped 30 shots as the Saints defeated 15th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Superior 3-1 on Friday night at Wessman Arena.
The Saints (6-6-0, 2-5-0 NCHA) scored the first goal of the night with eight minutes to go in the first period when #Cody Danychuk# netted his first collegiate goal with assists from #Eric Kraft# and #Chad Golanowski#. CSS outshot UWS 11-8 in the first 20 minutes.
#Alex Valenti# added to the Saints' lead eight minutes into the second period with his second game-winning goal in as many games. #Brandon Nowakowski# and #Neil Sauter# assisted on the tally.
The Yellowjackets (7-4-1, 5-2-0 NCHA) got on the board with 2:32 left in the period on a Derek Stauber power-play goal.
Patrick Sullivan (Kelowna, British Columbia/Chase Secondary (Fort William-SIJHL) ) stepped up for the Saints in the third period with Superior out-shooting the Saints 14-6 in the period. #Jeremy Dawes# put the game on ice with 16 seconds left on an empty-net goal to make the final score 3-1. #Riley Riddell# and #Tyler Miller# had the assists. Dawes has now scored in five of the six games he has played in since returning from injury.
Sullivan improves to 4-4 on the year. Drew Strandberg had 20 saves in the loss for the Yellowjackets. CSS committed five penalties for 10 minutes, while the 'Jackets had just one penalty. The Saints have won four straight regular season games against bridge rival UWS.
The Saints and Yellowjackets will finish up play for the 2010 calendar year tomorrow night at Wessman Arena. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC.
