Phaneuf Gives Men’s Hockey the Win in Overtime

APPLETON, Wis. – Stephane Phaneuf (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Paul’s HS (Winnipeg South-MJHL) ) scored a breakaway goal in overtime to give the St. Scholastica men's hockey team a 6-5 victory over Marian University (Wis.) on Saturday in the MCHA/NCHA Thanksgiving Showdown, hosted by Lawrence University.

The Sabres (5-5-0) struck first at the Appleton Ice Center with a Matt Williams power-play goal eight minutes into the game. #Carter Davis# responded with a power-play goal for the Saints (4-5) with 9:14 remaining in the opening period to tie it. #Austin Brown# had the assist.

Marian regained the lead less than two minutes later with a goal by Brendan Roberts. The Sabres took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

The Saints tied the contest up with nine minutes to go in the second period as #Jeremy Dawes# scored for the third consecutive game. #Tyler Miller# and #Daman Milsom# had the assists. The Sabres' Justin Cormier made it 3-2 with five minutes to go in the second period. Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) then added his second power-play goal one minute and 21 seconds later to tie it at 3-3 at the second intermission. #Alex Valenti# and #Ryne Bodger# had the assists.

Matt Williams scored his second of the day just two minutes into the third period to make it 4-3 Marian. Carter Davis (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Central Collegiate (Waywayseecappo-MJHL) ) responded with the hat trick and his third power-play goal of the day to tie it once again at 4-4 with 7:40 remaining. Brown and Valenti had the assists.

Davis then gave CSS its first lead with 2:16 left in the third on his first even-strength goal, but his fourth overall for the game. Valenti and Phaneuf had the assists. However, the Sabres would tie the game in the waning moments with a goal by Lane Boswell with 14 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied in 5-5.

In overtime, Phaneuf would get the puck on a breakaway and give the Saints their first overtime win of the season with 2:25 left in the game. Davis and #Kyle Cowan# had the assists.

#Brennan Poderzay# earned the win in net stopping 43 shots to earn his second win of the season. It was Poderzay's first action since the November 6th win at Saint John's. Josh Baker stopped 54 shots in the loss for the Sabres.

The Saints get back to the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action next weekend when they return home to face last year's national runner-up and third-ranked St. Norbert College Friday and Saturday night at Mars Lakeview Arena.
