APPLETON, Wis. – After the St. Scholastica men's hockey team scored two, third period goals to take its first lead, Lawrence University scored three goals in the final three minutes to defeat the Saints 4-2 on Friday night in the MCHA/NCHA Thanksgiving Showdown.
The loss by the Saints (3-5) is the first out of conference loss this season. The Vikings (6-1) scored those three goals in a span of one minute and 31 seconds to extend their winning streak to five in a row.
The first 36 minutes were relatively quiet with no goals and five penalties. However, Lawrence capitalized on the power-play with 3:36 left in the second period on a Jameson Raymond goal.
It remained 1-0 until #Jeremy Dawes# scored his second goal in as many games with 7:25 left in the first period to tie it. #Riley Riddell# had the assist. Riddell then gave the Saints the lead two minutes later thanks to assists from Dawes and #Tyler Miller#.
However, the Vikings tied it at 2-2 with 2:38 left in the game with a goal from Josh DeSmit. Just eight seconds later, Matt Hughes gave the Vikings the lead at 3-2. Hughes then added an empty net goal with 57 seconds left to make the final score 4-2.
Both teams finished with 35 shots. #Patrick Sullivan# had 31 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Michael Baldino had 33 saves in the win for the Vikings.
The Saints will conclude the showdown tomorrow at 4 p.m. when they play Marian University (Wis.). The game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC with Steve Jezierski on the call.
