DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team returned to its home ice after a two-week road trip, exploding for a season-high six goals in a 6-2 defeat of non-conference rival Northland College on Saturday evening at Mars Lakeview Arena.
With the victory, the Saints improve to 3-4-0 on the season. All three of their victories have come outside of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) competition. The LumberJacks fall to 0-6-0 on the season with another tough loss.
CSS got on the board first, as #Colin Trachsel# netted an even-strength goal shortly after the 10-minute mark of the first period, taking a shot from the point courtesy of assists from #Jeremey Dawes# and #Riley Riddell#.
The 'Jacks proved their resoluteness quickly, coming back to tie the game just over two minutes later thanks to David Little's first of the season. The Saints regained the lead at the 18:17 mark in the first as #Bobby Lipsett# scored his first of the year in a flurry in front of the net, with assists coming from #Eric Kraft# and #Alex Valenti#.
The 2-1 score held through the intermission until Northland made good on a powerplay opportunity with Chad Moore netting his third of the year to even the score once again just 8:45 into the second period.
Six minutes later, #Paul Marcoux# made a move around a 'Jacks defender and took a low shot to put the Saints ahead once again, and this time for good. #Carter Davis# and #Ryne Bodger# had the assists.
The Saints held the 'Jacks scoreless in the third, but put three more goals on the board in the final frame, starting with Dawes' first of the season in his return to the lineup, scoring at the 9:13 mark with assists from #Tyler Miller# and Riddell.
The Saints went on the penalty kill just 34 seconds after the Dawes score, but #Austin Brown# made it irrelevant with a short-handed goal at exactly the 11-minute mark of the third. Marcoux and Riddell had the assists.
Miller finished out the scoring for the Saints just three minutes later, netting his second of the year courtesy of assists from Riddell, his fourth of the game, and #Nate Taurence#.
Goaltender #Patrick Sullivan# earned the victory in net for the Saints, making 20 saves on 22 LumberJack shots. Daniel McIntosh stopped 30 of 36 for Northland.
CSS finished with nine penalties for 18 minutes while Northland had six penalties for 12 minutes. The 'Jacks were one-for-six on the powerplay while the Saints went scoreless in three opportunities.
The Saints will take part in the Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by Lawrence University (Wis.), on Friday and Saturday of next week. The Saints will open with the host, Lawrence, on Friday at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 560-WEBC with Steve Jezierski on the call.
