DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team scored two goals in the first 20 minutes and never looked back in a 3-0 victory over Northwestern College on Tuesday at Saints Field in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinal contest.
The Saints (16-3-2) scored just four minutes into the game when #Toby Peter# headed in a corner kick from #Brandon Stemwedel#. For Peter, it was his 100th career point, becoming just the fifth Saints player to accomplish that feat.
CSS then got some help from the Eagles (9-9-3) in the 18th minute when on a Stemwedel cross it was inadvertently kicked into the Eagles' net by a Northwestern player to make it 2-0.
The Saints put the game away in the 74th minute when off a free kick, #Jermaine Dacres# played a ball to #Dustin James#, that was then played to #Cody Sveiven#, who put the ball in the net to make the final score 3-0.
#Sam Reed# earned his 13th shutout of the season, stopping three shots. Josh Niedermayer picked up the loss for the Eagles. The Saints outshot the Eagles 10-6 and had an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Saints will host the University of Minnesota-Morris for the UMAC Tournament Championship and a berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at Saints Field. This will be the fourth straight year the two teams have met for the tournament title. CSS won last year in an epic shootout at Morris, but the Cougars had won the previous two in Duluth. The match will begin at 2 p.m. and can be seen live, courtesy of the iFan Sports Network, at csssaints.com.
