SUPERIOR, Wis. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team fell in its season opener to bridge rival University of Wis.-Superior by a 86-62 final at Mertz Mortorelli Gym on Tuesday evening.
The Yellowjackets jumped out on the Saints early, leading by eight at the ten-minute mark of the first half. The Saints cut the lead to two by the 15-minute mark, but the Yellowjackets pulled away, leading by 13 at the half.
CSS had just 25 points at the half, with senior #Kelly Cinquegrani# leading the way with seven at half. The Yellowjackets had 38, led by three players with seven points each.
The 13-point lead proved too much for the Saints to overcome as the Yellowjackets pulled away late, leading by as much as 27 in the second half before holding on for the 86-62 final.
Cinquegrani led the Saints with 13 points in the contest, while freshman #Savanna Treichel# adding 11 of her own. Treichel led the Saints with seven rebounds. Sophomore #Ashlee Blegen# led the Saints with four steals.
Bri Davis led Superior with 16 points while five 'Jackets had double-digit points. Connie Urmanski led the Jackets with nine assists while Kelsy Thingvold added eight rebounds.
The Saints hit the road on Saturday to take on the Oles of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. The tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live by St. Olaf.
