ST. PAUL – The St. Scholastica volleyball team completed the regular season unbeaten for just the second time in program history on Saturday, defeating Northwestern College in four sets 22-25, 25-21, 25-11, 25-16.
The only other known time the Saints finished unbeaten in conference play was during the 1984 season. CSS (27-6, 14-0 UMAC) also extends its win streak to 11 matches. The Saints have now won three straight against the Eagles (24-12, 11-3 UMAC) after losing the previous five matchups.
The Eagles jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set, but that's as high as the margin got. The score would be tied for the seventh time in the set at 22-22, but back-to-back kills and service aces by the Eagles gave Northwestern the first set, 25-22.
St. Scholastica used a 7-0 run in the second set on its way to winning 25-21. The Saints then had a 13-3 lead in the third set thanks to an 8-0 run and then later had a 7-0 run to take the third set 25-11.
CSS scored the first six points of the fourth set and was never caught as it ended the match in four 25-16.
#Anna Zyvoloski# led the Saints with 20 kills with #Paige Hardy# adding 12 kills and #Taylor Tyllia# nine kills. #Sarah Kurtovich# had 45 assists and #Nikki Hughes# had 22 digs, which puts her over 1,000 for her career. #Megan Windschitl# had a six block assists and a block solo, while Zyvoloski had five block assists.
The Saints will host Martin Luther in the UMAC Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday night in Reif Gymnasium. Starting this year, the winner of the UMAC Tournament will get the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
