ST. PAUL – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team finished the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season undefeated with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Northwestern College on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints finish the regular season with a 15-3-2 overall record and 12-0-2 UMAC record. The Eagles fall to 9-9-2 overall and 7-5-1 in-conference. The Saints will be the top seed in the UMAC Postseason Tournament beginning Tuesday afternoon, and will host the fourth-seeded Eagles in a rematch of today's game.
Northwestern got on the board first at 16:02 in the first period as Jeremy Stiner netted an unassisted tally to take an early lead.
Both teams took just one shot in the first half. In the second half, the Saints' offense came alive with nine shots compared to three from the Eagles.
CSS finally tied the game in the 76
th minute as senior #Ian Linder# scored just his second collegiate goal (and first of the season), knocking the ball in off a #Jermaine Dacres# corner kick. With the assist, Dacres now sits just one point away from ninth all-time on the Saints leading scorers list with 79 career points.
The score remained tied through the two overtime periods as the Saints continued to control the offense, taking five shots in overtime compared to Northwestern's one.
#Sam Reed# made two saves in the tie and finishes the season 14-3-2. Josh Niedermayer made nine saves to preserve the tie for the Eagles.
The Saints and Eagles will meet again in the UMAC Postseason Tournament semifinals on Tuesday at Saints Field. The winner of the postseason tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
