DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team was relegated to playing a man down in the final 30 minutes of action and the 13th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh capitalized with a goal in the 83rd minute to defeat the Saints 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Saints Field.
This was the first-ever meeting between the Saints (10-3-1) and the Titans (13-0-1). The loss snaps an 11-game unbeaten streak for the Saints, who had not allowed a goal in the past five contests coming in.
The Titans got off more total shots (12-1) and shots on goal (4-1) in the contest, but the Saints had the advantage in corner kicks 10-4.
Oshkosh's best opportunity in the first half was on a free kick just outside the box in the 19th minute that was saved by #Sam Reed#. The Saints were unable to get a shot off in the first half.
In the second half, CSS came out much more aggressive and had a header on net by #Jermaine Dacres#, which was saved in the 50th minute. The Saints would then go down a man in the 59th minute due to a second yellow card being shown.
The Titans then started to put on the pressure, but the Saints were holding their own. However, in the 83rd minute Jack Borski played a ball into the box and Evan Maly put it in the back of the net to give the Titans the 1-0 lead. The Saints would be unable to get a good opportunity the rest of the way as UW-Oshkosh took the contest 1-0.
Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) had three saves in the loss for the Saints. James Pike had one save in the shutout for the Titans. There were a total of 10 yellow cards shown and 26 fouls called in the game.
The Saints will head on the road next weekend as they will face Presentation College on Saturday and the University of Minnesota-Morris on Sunday. Both matches will begin at noon.
