NORTHLAND PULLS AWAY LATE TO DEFEAT CSS WOMEN

ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team hung with the top team in the conference for much of today's contest, but Northland College pulled away late to win 60-48 at Kendrigan Gymnasium.

The Saints fall to 7-9 overall and 2-3 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The LumberJills improve to 9-5 overall and remain unbeaten in the UMAC at 5-0. The Saints have lost four straight games against 'Jills in Ashland.

The teams exchanged the lead in the first five minutes of the contest, until the LumberJills went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-9 lead with 11 minutes in the half. The Saints cut it back down to three, but the 'Jills used another 8-0 run to extend their lead to 25-14 with over six minutes to go. CSS responded with an 11-2 run to cut the margin down to two. Northland would go into halftime with a 31-27 advantage.

The Saints shot 44-percent from the field in the first 20 minutes and did not attempt a free throw. Northland shot 46-percent and made five, 3-pointers. Both teams scored 10 points in the paint and both benches scored eight points.

The LumberJills held on to the lead, but could not extend their margin by more than five in the first 10 minutes. The Saints eventually would tie the game at 38-38 on a #Kelly Cinquegrani# (Jr.-Buffalo, Minn.) layup with 9:31 to go. Northland responded with a 6-0 run, but back-to-back 3-pointers by #Bri Allen# (Fr.-West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley) and #Alexa Leighton# (Sr.-Superior, Wis.) tied it up again at 46-46 with four minutes to go.

However, the Saints would not make a field goal the rest of the way as Northland closed the game on a 14-2 run to win by a score of 60-48.

CSS shot just 23-percent in the second half to finish at 33-percent for the game. St. Scholastica out-rebounded Northland 39-33. The LumberJills shot 40-percent for the game and made nine more free throws than the Saints.

#Kirsten Haukom# (Sr.-Marshall, Minn.) scored 13 points to lead the Saints in scoring. She had 11 of the 13 in the first half. Kelly Cinquegrani (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) added eight points. #Laura Amys# (So.-South Range, Wis./Superior) had a team-high nine rebounds. Lindsey Hamm had a game-high 19 points to lead the 'Jills.
